Technical instructions
What is technical usage information?
Technical usage information or product documentation is the entirety of technical documents, technical drawings, risk assessments and usage information for a product. Such a product is “a good, substance or mixture that has been manufactured by a production process” [Q. ProdSG §3 para. 4]. In addition to machines and other individual components, this also includes systems and plants. If products are placed on the market (made available for the first time) within the European Trade Union (EU), they are also subject to the corresponding harmonization regulations. However, the technical usage information not only supports legally compliant provision, it is also an essential part of quality assurance and knowledge management.

What documents does the user need?
In accordance with the Product Safety Ordinance, manufacturers are obliged to provide the target group with the necessary information for safe and intended use. Missing or incorrect instructions are considered a product defect. It is particularly important to present and prepare safety information in a way that is appropriate for the target group in order to exclude liability risks. The information that is relevant for the use of the products is called usage information. In practice, depending on the context, these are then referred to as operating instructions, instructions for use, operating instructions, etc.
A distinction must be made:
- Usage information that covers all phases of the product’s life cycle.
- Usage information for individual life phases (e.g. assembly or maintenance instructions)
- Usage information for software
- Usage information for complex systems, e.g. process engineering systems
Our demands on the documentation
As a certified service provider, we are happy to support you in creating your instructions with trained technical writers. We are guided by the requirements of EN IEC/IEEE 82079-1, which regulates the form and content of technical instructions. We are always up to date with this very important standard for the industry, as our Managing Director Martin Tillmann is deputy chairman of the German mirror committee for this standard and is also involved at international level.
We create instructions and documentation in the customer’s desired format as print-optimized PDF files with bookmarks or in mobile formats (e.g. as an AR app, VR app or e-book). Other editable and non-editable output formats (e.g. MS Word, PDF/A) are also available on customer request

User documentation for machine operators
Operator documentation for the application
Consisting of all documents for the daily use of a machine, including above all the operating instructions and accident prevention regulations, the user documentation is intended to ensure proper and safe use. Company-specific issues such as the specific installation situation are also taken into account.
Plant documentation
As-built documentation for large and complex systems
Large and complex systems such as power plants, sewage treatment plants or factories with production lines require system documentation that is comprehensive and includes all operating instructions, drawings, plans, expert opinions, approvals, etc. to ensure the safe and proper operation of the system.

Building documentation
As-built documentation for facility management
Based on the requirements for successful facility management, the building documentation summarizes all the documents required for the use and maintenance of a building. In addition to meeting legal requirements, the aim is to enable optimum building management throughout the entire building life cycle.
